Christmas Cleaning Tips

It’s almost the silly season, and no doubt you’re already starting to stock up on presents and plan menus. But before you break out the tree and ornaments, here are a few Christmas cleaning tips to help keep the mess, clutter and stress down to a minimum.

Declutter Early

Especially if you have kids, there will be an influx of new and exciting gifts, so make room for them now, before the big day. It also makes it easier to do a thorough clean.

Recycle

You will have wrapping paper and boxes and all sorts of cardboard and plastic coming into your home, so make sure you get any recycling of old magazines or empty jars done early, so you have plenty of room in the bin for the inevitable Boxing Day mess.

Clean Out The Fridge & Freezer

Whether you go with the traditional turkey and roast vegies, or you’re more a prawns and salad kind of family, your fridge is likely to be bursting at the seams. So before the big day, empty it out, give it a good clean – see our article How to Clean Your Fridge – and throw out anything that is past its best, nearly empty, or just plain weird. And once it’s cleaned out, get started making ice cubes early. You can never have too many of those in an Australian summer!

Give Everything A Good Dusting

BEFORE you put the Christmas decorations out. Especially if, like us, you’re one of those families who turn their house into Santa’s cave at Christmas. Because there’s nothing worse than having to dust around dozens of reindeer and angels. And giving the furniture a polish with Lemon Oil will leave everything smelling beautiful for the big day.

Check The Christmas Ornaments Are All In Good Working Order

Are the lights all tangled? Do you need some new bulbs? Are any battery-operated decorations in need of new batteries? And Top Christmas-Expert Tip – new tinsel is always a good idea, because too much is never enough!

Christmas Tablecloth & Napkins

If your Christmas table includes the once-a-year Christmas tablecloth and napkins, get them out early and give them a wash. Especially this year when we’ve had so much rain, they may be a little on the musty side. Our Ocean Fresh Laundry Powder will give your linen a lovely fresh scent.

Crockery, Cutlery & Glassware

Similarly, if you use the ‘best’ crockery, cutlery and glassware, give it a run through the dishwasher so it’s squeaky clean. Jamac Dishwashing Powder or Auto Dishwashing Liquid will leave things sparkling. And don’t forget the Rinse Aid to ensure glasses are spot-free.

Prepare The Barbeque

Give it a good clean with Oven and Grill Cleaner and check the level of the gas bottle. Nobody wants to run out of gas halfway through cooking those prawns on Christmas Day.

However you choose to celebrate the Christmas season, a little pre-planning goes a long way. And remember to relax and enjoy yourself. As much as we want things to be perfect, being with the ones you love is the most important thing of all.
